What treatment methods are available?

Medication

The most common medications used for ADD/ADHD are psychostimulant medications.  These include Ritalin, Concerta, Adderall, Dexedrine.  These medications are effective in about 80% of children with ADD/ADHD.

Due to certain health concerns, children with tics or heart problems are normally not placed on stimulant medication.

Parent Training

Parenting a child with ADHD can be a difficult job and sometimes takes changing the style of parenting.  For example, normal rewards/consequences do not always work with children with ADD/ADHD.  Parenting must be more consistent, more routine and create a system of immediate rewards.  Children with ADD/ADHD are also more prone to become bored or resistant to normal parenting techniques.  Counselors and psychologists with experience working with children with ADD/ADHD may provide insight and training into changing parenting styles to work effectively with a child.

Behavior Modification

Behavior modification is a term used for any system of reward/consequence where the goal is to change the behavior.   Many times charts and chips or points are used.  Behavior Modification systems are adaptable and adjustable to the needs of a specific child.  The most effective systems would include a thorough evaluation of the child’s needs, strengths and weaknesses.  This information would be used to develop a system specific to that child, with goals for certain behavior changes worked into the system.
